1. The Practice of English Language Teaching – Jeremy Harmer. A brilliant overview of everything to do with English Language teaching. Should be required reading for every new, and not so new, teacher!
2. Learning Teaching - Jim Scrivener. Another outstanding book covering all areas of English Language teaching with great guides on pretty much anything you could think of related to the classroom
3. 5 minute activities – Penny Ur. A teacher’s staple for many years but still probably the best there is. You’ll never run out of warmers and coolers if you’ve got this with you. A must have.
4. Practical English Usage – Michael Swan. Indispensable is the most common work used to describe this book, answering pretty much every question about English you’re every likely to be asked. Worth its weight in gold.
5. Sound Foundations – Adrian Underhill. Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about pronunciation and how to teach it, from another of the TEFL legends.
6. Teaching Tenses – Rosemary Aitken. English grammar and tenses are, whether you like it or not, important and this not only explains everything in manageable chunks but also gives great ideas for lessons and practice. Another classic TEFL book.
7. 700 classroom activities – David Seymour and Maria Popova. You’re never going to be stuck for something to do with this book by your side. Doing exactly what it says on the tin there are 700 great activities to use and adapt in the classroom.
8. Young Learners – Sarah Philips. Almost wherever you teach you’re going to be faced with Young Learners at some stage so why not be prepared with this excellent book providing a whole host of activities and suggestions. Brilliant.
9. Grammar Games – Mario Rinvolucri. Mario has been one of the TEFL greats for many years and has continued to explore all manner of ways to help teachers teach. This book provides loads of great ways to teach and explore that all important grammar. Trust us, your students will never be bored when you use this book to help you.
10. How to teach vocabulary – Scott Thornbury. No list of great TEFL books is complete without something from Scott Thornbury. Without vocabulary there wouldn’t be any language and here’s a great book on how to teach those all important words. Need we say more .
